I’m currently studying candle magic. The book I am reading is called: Candle Magic, A Coveted Collection of Spells, Rituals and Magical Paradigms by Phillip Cooper. It is quite informative.

I consider Wicca to be a persoanl development religion. I don’t really believe you can cast a spell to control other people (despite with xtianity says) however, I do believe Wicca can teach you about yourself and how you can better yourself which in turn may encourage people to cooperate with you. Out of all of the religions I think Wicca best understands the circular nature of life and how things always begin and end with ourselves. Here are just a few things that I want share from the book:

The first chapter of the book talks about how everything in life is energy and how our subconscience mind directs this energy to bring us what we have and want in life. Our subconscience mind is a neutral, non judgemental force and cannot tell the difference between destructive wishes and constructive wishes. It just acts on what we tell it to bring us.

The subconcious mid does not  know the difference between good and bad. It only acts on the instructions that you give it and carries them out, whatever they may be. If you believe something, it always comes true[...]

Children, especially the very young, willingly accept (believe) just about anything that they see or hear. The danger is that, if these impression, or values, happen to be wrong or harmful, they will continue to come true throughout the person’s life because they have been accepted by the subconcious mind. That is, unless they are changed. Fortunately, most people do change most of their early beliefs adn so their lives get better. However, the beliefs that go unchanged still continue to work, inevitably causing problmes. Naurally, people then start to blame others, or some intangible, such as fate or karma. Whole religions and philosophies have been build on this kind of inaccurate thinking. The fault lies not with fate, bad luck, or evern with God. The real problem lies within your own subconcious mind[...]

[...]The cause of problems lies within you, therefore the solution to the problem is found, not by blaming life or anyone else but by substituting new and better beliefs for old ones[...]

The “magic” of this book is based on helping us change our thoughts and beliefs. The candle part exists only as a point of focus. I really like this because as open as I am to the possibility of the existence of supernatural things and abilities, I am more comfortable with things that I can easily see and experience for myself.

I’m at the end of chapter two. We are supposed to go out and buy a candle that represents ourself and practice a couple of visualization excercises with it. We supposed to put a lot of thought into what kind of candle to get. I’ve decided that I want to get a black candle to represent me.

I’ve gone back and forth about this because of all the negative meanings associated with the color black. Demonism, Satanist etc. I truly feel that the color black has been misrepresented in society. Perhaps it is just idealism on my part but I feel the color black represents unconditional acceptance. Think about it, black is the combination of all colors of the rainbow. It does not judge a color unworthy of acceptance. It just takes it within itself. Maybe this is a bad thing but I happen to see this as good. It is not the tool that is good or bad but rather the perspective and intention.

I think black represents me because I feel that I accept all things until they prove that they are not healthful or helpful. Because of this I’ve also given thought to getting a dark purple candle. Having a little bit of color, I feel, would represent this rejection of harmful things. We’ll see. There is a metaphysical shop about an hour away from where I live so I will go down this weekend and “see what calls to me” (lol).

Any suggestions would be welcomed.
